Book Review

Title: Pain-Free: The Definitive Guide to Healing Arthritis, Low Back Pain, and Sports Injuries through Nutrition and Supplements.
Author: Luke Bucci, PhD, CCN
Publisher: Summit Publishing Group
Publication: Hardcover, 248 pages
Category: Patient and doctor education.
Price: U.S. $24.95, Canada $33.75

Pain-Free is a simplified version of Nutrition Applied to Injury Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, Dr. Bucci's landmark book published in 1994. I say simplified instead of lay because this book is by no means "below" a chiropractor's level. In fact, for the average clinician, this book is more valuable than Nutrition Applied to Injury Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine because of the way Dr. Bucci easily explains the biochemistry of injury and tissue repair.

Included in this explanation are discussions about how substances such as glucosamines, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and even nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories affect tissue response to inflammation and healing. Dr. Bucci also includes sample healthy and unhealthy diets, as well as supplemental protocols for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic inflammation such as ligament and meniscal insult, dislocation, fractures, tendinitis, and bursitis. There are even recommendations on nutrient supplementations for skin damage, surgery, lacerations, and abrasions. These supplemental protocols are quite detailed and something that many chiropractors have been asking about for years.

This book is a must-read for any DCs who would like to help their patients get well and stay well.

Dr. G. Douglas Andersen's rating: 10 out 10
