AHCPR Back Panel
In November of 1991, the federally funded Agency for Health Care
Policy and Research (AHCPR) began conducting a panel to develop
guidelines for low back disorders. The project is scheduled to
run one year. Two DCs are on that panel: Scott Haldeman, D.C.,
M.D., Ph.D., and John Triano, D.C., M.A.
The Mercy Center Conference (Jan. 25--30 in San Mateo Cal.) will
establish chiropractic's own standards of care that will have the
opportunity of influencing and or being included in the AHCPR's
guidelines. Scott Haldeman is chairman of the Mercy Center
Conference and John Triano is on the steering committee and is a
committee captain.
Canada Developing Standards of Practice
The idea of developing standards of care for the chiropractic
profession is not just a U.S. phenomenon. The Canadian
Chiropractic Association (CCA) and other prominent chiropractic
organizations throughout Canada are in the process of developing
chiropractic practice guidelines and standards.
The impetus for establishing chiropractic guidelines in Canada is
the same as it is in the U.S. -- not to leave the government or
other health professionals to set standards for us.
Guidelines are being established for twenty areas of chiropractic
practice.
Final draft standards are expected by June 1992.
HEAL Funding
What will be the outcome of S.1933, the Senate bill to reauthorize
the HEAL program?
Senator Kennedy's staff holds out hope the measure will see floor
action very soon.
Time however is running out in this session for the House and
Senate to meet and work out differences on their respective bills
dealing with HEAL.
Action is being taken to assure loan funds will be available to
new borrowers even without passage of the reauthorization bill.
